VIVE Pro Secure Opens VR to Sensitive Government and Commercial Proprietary IP Environments
The demand for VR across government organizations is increasing and will continue to grow as agencies adapt many of the best practices developed and deployed across the private sector for use in training, data visualization, and manufacturing, among other use cases. A major obstacle to any technology – including VR – for adoption by organizations that require ATO (Authority To Operate) is access to hardware that meets strict and specific security and privacy requirements. The new VIVE Pro Secure is the first VR HMD and system that delivers specific hardware modifications to provide optimal performance, features and capabilities in the most demanding and strict secure environments.
VIVE Pro Secure can go where other VR offerings cannot. It’s a secure setup that delivers serious results. VR products typically use multiple wireless technologies for tracking, power management, and connectivity. Secure location deployment requirements vary, but in most cases the fundamental requirement is the ability to disable wireless communications. VIVE Pro Secure exceeds those requirements by having physically disabled wireless components, cameras, and microphones.
Component | Purpose | Removal Impact | Hardware Modification |
Headset Wireless Dongles | Built-in wireless accessory to pair accessories such as controllers or trackers directly with the headset | Accessories need to be connected directly to the USB port of a computer or the headset | Component power is severed |
Headset Cameras | Used for augmented reality and additional chaperone functions | No camera functions1 | Component power is severed |
Headset Microphone | For chatting and audio recording |
No audio detection1 |
Microphone chip is removed |
Controller Radio |
Wirelessly connect to the embedded headset dongles or standalone USB dongle to pass controller input, tracking, and haptic data |
Controllers need to be connected directly to the USB port of the computer or headset | Controller radio chip is removed |
Base Station Radio | Turn on the base station wirelessly. Switch to standby mode wirelessly. Update firmware wirelessly | Turing the base station on or off must be done manually and firmware updates must be performed manually | Base station radio chip is removed |
Link Box Radio | Controlling the base station or pairing a mobile phone | Base station functions must be performed manually and no mobile phone interaction is available | Replaced link box with a converter cable that has n radio chip |
1The USB Type-C port on the headset can still be used to connect accessories.
VIVE Pro Secure offers the following features and benefits:
Secure Deployment
The VIVE Pro Secure hardware modifications ensure optimal performance while restricting all radios, cameras, and wireless communication functions.
Offline SteamVRTM Library
This VR system includes access to the Offline SteamVR Library, which allows installation in a secure environment where the machine is not connected to the internet. Even if a machine is connected to the internet, the installer will not send or receive any data online.
Precision Tracking
Teleport around your own virtual space while seated at a desk or create a dedicated room-scale area to physically walk around. The sub-millimeter accuracy of SteamVR Tracing provides the best experience possible.
High Resolution Display
VIVE Pro Secure features dual-OLED displays with a resolution of 2880 x 1600 pixels. This makes graphics, text, and textures look perfectly crisp. It provides the visual fidelity required for the most demanding use cases and environments.
Engineered for Comfort
Featuring even weight distribution, the headset has been ergonomically engineered to provide maximum comfort and flexibility, even with extended use. It adjusts easily to accommodate a wide range of head sizes, interpupillary distance (IPD), and even glasses.
3D Spatial Audio
Hi-res headphones and 3D spatial integration with a built-in amplifier offers true-to-life audio with increased volume and resonance.
