Allison Shelley, freelance photographer, has been chosen as the recipient of the White House News Photographers 2011 Project Grant. The grant of $10,000, half from the WHNPA and a matching amount of $5,000 from PNY Technologies, will fund her project to examine and raise awareness on the health implications of adolescent childbearing in rural India. Every minute a woman dies from pregnancy-related causes according to The United Nations Population Fund. In developing countries maternal mortality is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age. But when the mother is under the age of 15, she is five times more likely to die in pregnancy or childbirth than a woman in her 20’s. Girls 15 to 19 are twice as likely to die in pregnancy.

Join award winning photographer Rick Friedman for his 2 day hands-on “Location Lighting Workshop”. This workshop is designed for wedding photographers, portrait photographers, photojournalists and serious amateurs who want to improve their knowledge of lighting. Topics include: color balances, color correction, cross filtering and adding and controlling color in your photographs. Students will work with many different types of light modifiers and you will see the effects of softboxes, umbrellas, light panels, screens, grids, snoots, reflectors, gobos and barn doors. Students will learn create lighting for different types of portraits and lighting situations both indoors and outside. Also, Rick will explain the various ways to fire strobes, how to build some of your own light modifiers and building your own gaffers kit. It's always amazing to see an idea start with a simple mission and blow up to a worldwide movement. It's also proof that photography can transcend economic lines, and help those in need. That's precisely what celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart pulled off and delivered with his Help-Portrait photography project.
